As I'm sure you've all noticed by now, Isshin takes his camp job pretty seriously. He got hired to be a daddy to you all and he's damn well gonna. But why is he so enthusiastic about it? I'm going to try to explain this part of my characterization of Isshin in a way that makes sense.

In the third volume of Bleach we get to see Isshin being simultaneously calm and serious for the first time. (Er, mostly.) When he's telling Ichigo that he fell in love with a woman who would die to protect her son, he's smiling like that's the best sort of person to be [1]. Even if it would be easier to hate Ichigo for giving Masaki a reason to die, he can't. Isshin loves his son too much and, as we later see during the story with Don Kanonji, he can't exactly say he wouldn't have done the same in her position [2, 3]. There's no way of telling how he came to have this sort of dedication until muuuuch later, when all of a sudden we learn that Isshin used to be not just a shinigami, but a shinigami captain. Shinigami are (supposed to be) dedicated to protecting the living and the balance of souls between the living world and the dead. For a captain who believes this whole-heartedly, it's only reasonable that if you protect perfect strangers with your very existence, it's even easier to do the same for the people you love.

Given what we know of Isshin from canon, it would be safe to assume that he still wants to help people when they're alive or he wouldn't have decided to become a doctor. There are plenty of other ways he could've chosen to support himself and his eventual family (and hey, even keep tabs on Ryuuken, since it really seems to me like they knew each other for a while before Isshin decided to play human full-time) otherwise. Between the two, Isshin sees all the kids in camp who haven't had the benefit of coming from a family as devoted as the Kurosakis and can't help but want to show them what it's like from the inside. And, because he got the job of Official Multi-Purpose Father Stand-In and has been playing Kooky Daddy for years, it's pretty easy to just point at someone and say "you! Adopted!" even if he doesn't necessarily know the person's name.

And that's basically it. I'll see if I can't flesh it out later, but if you have anything you want clarified or just want to discuss, have at.

I woke up this morning with the back of my throat feeling dry as the desert and the dreaded yellow snot occupying my nose, both sure indicators that I've caught the cold Mom was suffering from recently. I might be able to comment-ninja a bit, but generally I'm going to be scarce for the next few days while I work on recovering to the point where thoughts in my head move faster than lukewarm molasses*. Sorry Daddy didn't get to traumatize everyone by prancing around in a kilt yesterday, too, I wasted the night trying to figure out if last-minute St. Patrick's Day road trip plans were still going to work or not. :(

I keep saying that one of these days the Kurosaki Family Barbecues are going to start up and I keep not doing anything, so tonight I'm going to fix that! For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, every month (sometimes twice) the Bleach Kurosakis have a cookout for family bonding. As with most things within the Kurosaki family, it gets violent pretty quickly as Daddy tries to steal meat from everyone else and claims are defended. Doesn't that sound like fun~?

The main point in camp is going to be to provide designated bonding time for everyone Isshin's adopted and anyone who wants to get the family atmosphere but doesn't have the extra people necessary. If you have a character on any part of the list in this entry or you'd like to, I'm currently aiming for March 24^th (ETA although the post will be kept open all weekend). If that's a really bad day for people, let me know and I'll pick another. Also keep in mind that Isshin considers attendance mandatory but I won't actually mind if you miss it. There's always next month, after all~!

The Playing Experience: Sometimes Isshin will be serious and sometimes he'll be crazy. Mostly he'll be more on the crazy end because it's what he's used to, but there's a lot more serious than in canon because Daddy Has A Mission! Also I'm slow as hell, especially when I've got a post up and moving. D: I try not to permanently drop threads until they're done, but sometimes I space out and forget about them so poke me if you want me to continue and I haven't. Also sometimes I'm a bit of a spammer, in case the part where I've posted at least five times and have nearly 2900 comments after only a month is any indication.

Goals: To speed up my threading, accomplish a bunch of the stuff on my This'll Be Fun IC list, and maybe someday work up to getting a second character. After that we'll see.

Isshin's Self-Imposed Name Rules

Girls and young women get -chan added to their given name or whichever name they tell Isshin to call them

Except for Death, who gets -san because she's Death itself

People Isshin's known since his shinigami days are generally referred to by their family names (Urahara and Ishida, for example, but not Yoruichi because she's Yoruichi)

Everyone else is referred to by their given name without suffixes unless they tell Isshin otherwise (such as Yuu-chan)

Also, if you're under a century old and/or look like anything short of elderly, Isshin's probably going to call you or think of you as some variant of "kid" at least once. Death, Shunsui, and Dumbledore would be the sort of people who wouldn't earn a "kid" no matter what.

Stats & Permissions Meme

Age: at least a couple of centuries old but looks to be mid-40s
Height: 186 cm/about 6'1''
Weight: 80 kg/about 176 lbs
Medical Info: Physically fit and biologically normal by human standards. Any tests that can register the real age of clones and replicas and the like might register him as not much older than 20, though.
Eyes: brown (correct me if I'm wrong)
Hair: black
Physical traits: Pretty solidly built, like a big ol' Daddy Rock. Isshin also has a stubborn resistance to roadburn, for all the good that'll do in camp...
What's Okay To Mention Around Him/Her: Just about anything: as of writing this Isshin doesn't know about either Bleach series, but he's adjusting pretty well to the idea of multiple realities so he'll just think it's weird that there's a series all about his kid being himself.
Abilities: Has captain-level control of his reiatsu and can completely pass as a human among shinigami from his world who don't actually recognize him from the old days. Can perform kidou (which is sort of like magic but is basically just another way of using reiatsu) in shinigami form or in his gigai, though he's forgotten a fair few of the incantations
Notes for the Psychics: Most of the time he reads as little more than the wacky guy he pretends to be, but if you decide to probe deeper, have a stronger than usual ability to recognize/sense death, or catch him when he's thinking about ghost dad things you'll notice at bare minimum that something's pretty damn off.
Can I shapeshift/bodyswap/spit at/step on/etc?: Sure!
Maim/Murder/Death: It largely depends on how normal he's trying to look, so you should probably ask first until he manages to start saving. After that we'll see.
Cooking: ...He can make things that are edible if he has to, but that's a big if. The magic of camp makes anything he actually makes for the KFBs edible and makes the refills itself.

Canon: Once upon a time Isshin married a woman who was more interested in his personality than his rugged manly good looks and that whole "doctor" thing. She was the most perfect wife and mother in the history of ever and they loved each other very much, so even though she's been dead six years now he feels completely justified in refusing to move on. His gigantic poster of her might be a bit much, but it drives his kids nuts so he keeps it prominently displayed.

These days Isshin concerns himself with providing for his three beloved children, caring for the people of Karakura via his cozy little clinic, keeping his son both in line and on his toes via unprovoked sneak attacks, calling in favors at the hospital from his old buddy Ishida, and generally going overboard in his unending quest to hide his utter coolness. Smoking? He's down to one cigarette a year as a romantic gesture to his darling Masaki. Having a serious moment? Watch out for knees aimed at your kidneys. All his sparkly love is an excellent way to (put your spoiler goggles on!) keep anyone from suspecting that wow, what do you know, Isshin used to be a shinigami too!
